Tourist Attractions in Panna

It is believed that Panna was the place where the Pandavas of Mahabharata fame stayed during their exile period. Besides the glittering dazzle of the diamonds and the famous wildlife park there is an array of other options which one can explore while on a trip to Panna. An important place for devotees, there are many ancient temples of religious importance in and around Panna. The temples are a combination of British, Mughal & Hindu architectural style with all having domes in plain, lotus or onion shape and a kalasha on top.

Spread over an area of 543 kms along the banks of the River Ken is the Panna National Park. This world-famous park is located at a distance of nearly 25 kms from Khajuraho and about 20 kms from Panna town. The park has been formed from the shooting reserves of the former royal states of Panna and Chhattarpur. Endowed with a varied topography comprising of deep gorges, plain & tranquil valleys and dense teak forest areas the park has rare species of wildlife. In the monsoon season the park becomes lush green with cascading waterfalls, vibrant & colourful flowers & wild animals roaming about, truly a sight to behold. One can catch a glimpse of the majestic Tigers, and other rare species of wild animals like Leopards, Wolves, Gharials, Blue Bulls, Chinkaras, Sambars, etc. One can also spot other animals like Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Cheetal, Chowsingha, Indian Fox, Porcupines, etc. while on a visit here.

Not only wildlife animals it is also a paradise for Bird-watchers with more than 200 species of birds present here; a delight for the tourists are the Vultures which can be easily spotted perched on cliffs along the river side. Water animals like Gharial & Mugger, numerous Fish Species, Turtles, etc. can be seen in the Ken River; a separate sanctuary for Gharial has been built here along with boating facilities for facilitating crocodile sight- seeing. Thus the rich combination of beauty, adventure, amazing flora & fauna and breath-taking natural scenery makes the visit to Panna National Park a truly memorable one. Madla & Hinouta are the two entry points of this reserve; guides, Jungle safaris and accommodation option in huts are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. The park remains open for tourists for 8 months from November to June; but there is a ban on diesel vehicles inside the Park.

Mahamati Prannathji Temple

Mahamati Prannathji Temple is recognised as an important temple of Pranamies as it is believed that Prannathji Mahamati Prannathji lived here for 11 long years. Built in 1692, the temple is thus a Pranami Tirtha, Param Dham or Mahamati's Punyasthali of the Pranamies as the famous saint took samadhi inside the temple only. The temple depicts the Mughal style of architectural with a dome, reminding us of Taj Mahal. Though the lotus form on the dome is as per the Hindu tradition.

The main attraction of the temple is the Shri Gummatji, which is a circular building with nine marble domes which symbolise the eight different directions. The central dome of the temple has a glittering Golden Kalasha and a Divine Panja representing the blessings of the saint. The main entrance of Central Dome is made of silver and is called as Kaman Darwaza. Another important part is the Rang Mahal having eight pahals and each of the pahal further comprises of 201 domes. An architectural marvel, thousands of devotees gather here on Sharada Purnima every year, to celebrate the Mahotsava.

Jugal Kishoreji Temple

Jugal Kishoreji Temple is a sacred Hindu temple in Panna which was built in the 17th Century by Raja Hindupat Singh, a Bundela King. This ancient temple was constructed following the Bundela architecture, having the traditional features like Nat & Bhog Mandapa, Garbh Grih and Pradkshana Path. The unique feature of the temple is that the idol placed in the Garbha Griha was brought from Vrindavan and therefore the attire & ornaments in which the idol has been dressed are of Bundelkhand style. The temple is thus a must visit for the devotees and other tourists coming to Panna city.

Padmavati Devi or Badi Devi Temple

This famous temple is on the banks of the Kilkila River near to Panna and hundreds of devotees visit the temple during the Nav-Durgotsava. It is a very ancient temple and has immense religious and historical importance as it is believed that Goddess Padmavati, still resides here and is looking after the prosperity & happiness of Panna City.

Baldeoji Temple

The historic Baldeoji Temple is another famous temple of Panna. The temple has been built in a British style of architecture and resembles the St. Paul's Cathedral in London City. Mr. Manly, an Italian supervised the construction of the temple and turned it into a beautiful structure. The temple has an idol of Shri Baldeoji built in black Shaligrami stone located in the center of a large hall called the Maha Mandapa. This central hall has large pillars and a raised platform which helps the devotees to view deity outside also and seek his blessings. Baldeoji Temple is thus considered as one of the finest building in Panna city; it attracts hundreds of tourist every year and is definitely worth a visit.

Situated in the Vindhyachal Ranges, Panna is endowed with many beautiful sites, gushing waterfalls and scenic views. Pandav Fall, Gatha Fall, Brihaspati Kund, Nand-Chand, Nachne, etc. are some of the places which have immense natural beauty. Located at a distance of just 12 kms from Panna, Pandava Falls is an ideal picnic spot and also a place of historical importance as it is believed that the Pandavas lived in the ancient caves here during their exile period. It is a 100 ft high waterfall which is perennial in nature and is fed by local springs. At the foot of the waterfall are some ancient caves with a large water pond in the center. The beauty of the palace increases manifold during the monsoons when the place has a lush green cover all around. A combined package trip to the Pandava Falls, Panna National Park and Panna town is available which comprises of an evening aarti at the temple, diamond shopping and a short trip to the diamond mines.

Gatha Fall

Gatha fall is about 300 ft high and is situated on the other side of the highway. The waterfall is quiet impressive and the cascading water falling from a height presents a very pleasant & refreshing sight to the tourists coming here.

Ken River

For the nature lovers, the river offers an excellent place to relax & rejuvenate in the lap of Mother Nature. Aquatic species of animals especially maggar and gharial can lazing around in the sun on the river banks is a common sight here which mesmerizes the wildlife-enthusiasts.

Other Famous Attractions near Panna

Madla, is a small picturesque village located on the banks of the Ken River, about 20 kms from Panna. Connected by the State Highway 6 to the airport and Panna National Park, it is a must stop-over place due to the two major attractions The Jugal Kishore temple and the Pran nath Temple present here which cannot be missed. Other famous attraction is Ajaygarh Fort which is located at a distance of nearly 36 kms from Panna. This place was once the capital of the mighty Chandelas; on their decline in 1731 the senior Chandela King gave the fort to his son Shri Jagat Raj. The fort has been built at a height of 688 metres and is a historical marvel depicting the architectural style of that era. Nachna is a small town located at a distance of 40 kms from Panna; as per legend it was the famous city of the Nagvakataka and Gupta empires. Famous for the Chaturmukha Mahadev temple called after the lingam enshrined inside which has four faces, the temple is thronged by devotes who come to worship here.

How to Reach Panna ?

By Air: The nearest airport is the Civil Airport at Khajuraho which is located at a distance of 25 kms from Panna, the airport in turn operates regular flights to some major cities like Delhi & Agra.

By Road: Panna is well-connected to other parts of the country by a network of roads; Government or privately run regular bus service connects Panna to other parts of the country. One can reach Panna easily from other cities like Delhi, Faridabad, Agra, Kanpur, Jhansi, Gwalior, Nagpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, etc. by road. To explore the National Park one can hire private vehicles & open jeeps which are available on full-day or half-day packages.

By Train: Satna Railway Station is the nearest railway station from Panna which is located at a distance of 91 kms from the city. On reaching here one can travel further to Panna by road. Other nearby stations from Panna are the Katni & Jhansi Railway Stations from where many trains ply to & fro at regular intervals.
